The advantages of high bulk magazine paper

Want to lower your mailing costs and reduce the weight of your magazine, without compromising on quality? Find out about the advantages of high bulk magazine paper.

The pandemic hit many UK businesses hard, but for the magazine industry, it had a positive impact.

It was suddenly faced with an audience keen to indulge their passions and eager to explore new areas of interest, with both time and the money to spend.

Magazine subscriptions rose and, even now, long after lockdown has ended and the world returned to the 'real' normal, the appetite for quality magazines remains.

To ensure your audience stays engaged on every level, what you print your magazine on is just as important as the content that goes inside it.

What is the best paper for magazines?

Every magazine, whether it's about the automotive world or zoology, is typically printed on either coated or uncoated paper.

Each offers a very different tactile experience for the reader.

    Coated high bulk paper

Many glossy magazines are printed on coated paper that has a high sheen, a surface that really makes graphic imagery and photos in a magazine stand out.

Glossy paper can protect the publication against wear and tear and humidity.

The common perception with coated grades is that they are all alike, however with careful analysis, bulk advantages can be achieved.

For example, some of our gloss & silk grades can be 7-8% thicker than the average coated commodity grade, weight for weight. This will allow you to drop grammage and enjoy the yield benefits.

If a particularly glossy finish is not essential, then your typical silk grade will offer a 10% higher bulk on average, compared with a gloss grade. It's worth considering based on your desired aesthetic and the 'look and feel' you're hoping to achieve.

    Uncoated magazine paper

"Never mind the quality, feel the width", so the saying goes. With our range of uncoated high bulk products, you get the best of both worlds.

As well as providing a different sensory experience for readers with a matt rough surface, uncoated paper can offer a bulk advantage of up to 30% or more, allowing you to reduce grammage and weight.

Your light yet thick magazine will give readers an organic and natural feel, while you save on costs because you are buying fewer tonnes. Win-win.

    Uncoated and coated woodfree paper

Magazines printed on higher bulk, woodfree papers are less likely to yellow over time, compared to paper that contains mechanical pulp.

That's because the lignin has been removed from the wood fibre. There are other environmental and economic benefits to using wood free coated and uncoated paper.

They include reduced deforestation and energy consumption, as well as improved waste management. It really is a climate-smart product.

Our range of woodfree uncoated papers includes grammages from 60 to 400, while our coated papers cover 90 to 400.
