  • Chris Green

    Compliance & Training Manager

Chris is what you might call a "lifer" at Denmaur. The company is the only employer Chris has ever had. Chris started out doing odd jobs during the summers in 2009 and worked his way up to his current role.

When not working, Chris enjoys time with wife, Susannah, and 18-month old daughter, Georgia, (with another family addition on the way). He is also a talented darts player, an avid sports shooter and an enthusiastic fisherman.

  • What is a day in your life at Denmaur like? What is the favourite part of your job?

Audits, scope 3, sustainability, Health and Safety, the occasional bit of transport, Bardon, Bescot...... No day is ever the same, which keeps me on my toes.

If you hadn't gone into the paper industry, what might you have done?

I have no idea! I kind of fell into the paper industry and it stuck.

What would your family and friends say Chris Green is really like?

I think they would say I am a kind, caring guy who looks after his family, works and plays equally hard and does his best at everything and for everyone.

With what four people would you spend a fishing and shooting weekend?

Jeremy Clarkson-he's funny, Claudio Ranieri of Leicester FC fame, Carl Fogarty, World Superbike legend, and my late grandfather who taught my father who then taught me how to shoot and fish.

As former Transport Manager, how is Denmaur's delivery fleet?

We recently added an extra articulated and 4 rigids across our two distribution sites which increased our carrying capacity while giving us better control of deliveries.

Why should customers buy from Denmaur?

We are leaders in sustainability, carbon balancing and Scope 3 reporting with a full range of paper products and a friendly sales team prioritising customer service. Why wouldn't you buy from Denmaur?

    How is new fatherhood?

You certainly have less time for yourself, that's for sure, but I love being a dad.

Best subject(s) in a pub quiz?

I drank my way through a geography degree so I would say geography and beer!

Best use of paper or packaging?

Since becoming a parent, I find that the creativity in some of the 'pop-up' books for kids is fantastic. "There's a Hippo in my Toilet" is probably the best of the lot!

What will Chris Green be doing ten years from now?

Who can say? I probably will still be here, although in what capacity nobody knows.

  • Sam Mills

Customer Service and Inside Sales - Bristol

Born in the Southwest, Sam joined Howard Smith Paper at 16 as an Accounts Clerk and Invoice Typist (remember typewriters?) eventually becoming Customer Service Manager for the Western Region. She joined Denmaur in 2015 to run our then new Bristol branch.

When not at work she enjoys camping and the outdoors with her partner, Gabe, but often you will find her riding her 14.3hh mare, Prin. Kayaking on the Norfolk Broads, theatre and stand-up comedy are also favourite pastimes.

  • How did you get into the paper industry?

Completely by luck via the local Job Centre. I applied, had an interview and subsequent job offer, all within 3 hours.

If you hadn't gone into the paper industry, what might you have done?

Definitely something medical, ideally in A&E.

What is a day in your life at Denmaur Bristol like? What is the favourite part of your job?

You need to be a juggler! It's a mixture of proactive and reactive, with constant reprioritisation of the workload to accommodate urgent matters. I've known many customers for over 30 years, the favourite part is the trust that they put in my ability to get the job done.

Who would play you in "Denmaur: The Movie" and why?

Olivia Coleman. Down to earth, a great sense of humour, and very nearly a national treasure!

If you could spend a whole weekend camping and kayaking with four other people, dead or alive, who would they be?

My friends and family are everything to me. I'd not swap them out for anyone. Don't take it for granted that they will always be around.

What is the future for paper as you see it?

I can't see a world without it that's for sure. If my ever-increasing book collection is any gauge, no one needs to worry!

Why horse riding? What makes for a good human-horse relationship?

Horses make my heart sing. Trust is the key, if you have mutual trust then they will take you to the ends of the earth, no questions asked.

What would be your best subject in a pub quiz (other than horses)?

An audible round for sure — I'm spookily good at recognising voices.

Why should customers buy from Denmaur?

Every person here is passionate about the role they play and genuinely wants to make a customer's life easier. I felt it on the day I joined and still feel it today.

What will Sam Mills be doing ten years from now?

Exactly 10 years from the date you read this I will be hitting retirement age. So crying probably!

  • Matt Groom

    Denmaur CFO (Sittingbourne)

Matt and his team in the finance department are kind of like the stagehands in a theatre: you don't often see them but the show can't go on without them.

Matt, an FCCA credentialled accountant and English Literature graduate, has been with Denmaur since 2020 after a long career at PE owned polystyrene products manufacturer and distributor where he finished as Group Finance Director. As a result of the company's recently implemented succession plan Matt has been named Chief Financial Officer and taken on additional supervisory responsibility for IT, Procurement and HR to supplement his department's core functions of credit control, financial reporting and banking relations.

He is married to Celina and they have two children aged 10 and 8.

  • How did you get into the accountancy?

I stumbled into it really. The first business I worked at was going through an IT ERP system change and needed someone to help them. I was only meant to be there for 6 months but quickly found I enjoyed it and there was lots to try and improve. After that I embarked on my ACCA qualifications and took over the running of the Finance department. The truth is I have seen a lot od businesses with great people and great ideas or products fail because the non-customer facing departments weren't strong enough. I am proud to have built several finance teams across different businesses, each one better than the last, that have been very strong and added value to the business.

    Favourite thing about Denmaur?

I have a great team around me which makes things so much easier. Knowing that everyone knows what they need to do and is committed to achieving that goal allows me to continue to challenge the business in its strategic goals. It is also very rewarding when we set new challenges either individually or as a group and we then see the achievement benefits.

    Favourite thing about your job?

The opportunities for change. There is so much that we do right as a business but there are always new ways of working or thinking about the needs of the business and its customers.

Who would play you in the film 'Denmaur'?

A tricky one so I'm going with an actor I admire rather than necessarily a reflection of myself and that would be Christian Bale. His transformations for movies are legendary and for me the sign of his skill as an actor is that you very rarely watch him and think this is Christian Bale playing a part. He is the character.

What is your favourite piece of print?

Not necessarily a piece of print but I recently bought a new pair of shoes, and I was really impressed by the way it was packaged. The quality of the materials and design was very clever as well as being highly sustainable. Rather than it just being packaging to transport the shoes in it was an extension of the brand and the brand values.

Why should people continue to use paper and board?

For me it is what stood out in my answer above. More and more companies are seeing the benefit of their printed marketing and packaging as an extension of their brand and brand ethos. it can be very powerful and really make a brand stand out from its competition. There is also the sustainability aspect of paper and board vs plastic. It is very noticeable when companies transition away from traditional plastic to a more sustainable source. Denmaur's challenge is to remain at the forefront of this transition and look to promote emerging product developments.

If we were to give you £1,000 to donate to charity, which one would it be?

Blood Cancer UK. A few years ago my wife lost a good friend and mentor to leukaemia so we support where we can.

What would be your specialised subject on Mastermind?

It would probably be music and specifically Rock and Metal. statistics show that over the age of 33 people stop discovering new music and I make a point of seeking out new albums from emerging artists every week.

    Favourite holiday destination?

Not really a holiday destination but every year I go to Download Festival and the atmosphere and people are amazing.

Why should people buy from Denmaur?

Because Denmaur has positioned itself as the leader in the UK when it comes to sustainability, the importance of which will only continue to grow through either legislation changes or cultural changes.

It is also where the opportunities of the future lie.
